It's interesting from a historical perspective to see where the genre came from, but I wouldn't call it fun. ![]() Tactics Ogre is the granddaddy of Japanese tactical RPGs, but honestly, the focus of the original game isn't really tactical battles so much leveling and RPG sim stuff - there's even a mode where you can have your party fight mock battles amongst themselves to train. And if you do lose characters, well, you're stuck grinding all your new guys you get to a higher level instead. That sounds hardcore, but practically speaking it means that you really want to win battles without anyone dying, something which is generally not a matter of tactics and very much a matter of having a party that's higher level than the enemy. Perhaps the key iissue with the SNES version is that there's immediate permadeath once a character drops to zero HP and, for most of the game, no way to revive characters. Both versions have some grinding, but it's considerably worse on the SNES/PS1 version, much more so than ever in Final Fantasy Tactics.
